Why we are doing this
As a kid, I (Denver) grew up in Bolivia from the ages of 6 to 11 years old. This experience changed me forever, and left me with a desire for my own children to experience something like this as well.
Where will be Traveling To?
- December 19th 2018 – January 31st 2019- La Mariposa Spanish School
- February 2019 – Esteli, Nicaragua
- March – first two weeks – Southern Guatemala – Guatemala City area
- March – 3rd week – Tikal – Mayan Ruins in North Guatemala
- March – last week – Belize
Goals for the Trip
1. Expose Kids to New Culture
In the current atmosphere of “America First” in this country, we would like our kids to be exposed to a world much bigger than Wayne Count, Ohio, and bigger than even the USA. Our desire is for them is to become global citizens, where people come first, not country.
2. Learn Spanish
Learning another language is a rewarding experience, however very challenging when done from an English speaking country. Even with the best Spanish teacher it is difficult to pick up a language without fully immersing oneself. Spending a significant time in another country full immersed, is by far the best way to learn a language.
For the 1st month of the trip we will be studying language at La Mariposa Spanish School in Nicaragua. For 2nd month, we plan to enroll our children in Nicaraguan school with other kids their age.
3. Escape Consumerism
Okay we can’t completely escape consumerism, but we are intentionally choosing to celebrate Christmas in Nicaragua. (Don’t feel to bad for our kids, we have wonderful relatives that I’m sure will make sure our kids have enough stuff before we go.) We would like our children to see how the rest of the world lives, and have hopefully have a newfound appreciation for the stuff they have.
4. Tilmor Project
Denver will be spending the 2nd month working with the Tilmor Project, a new product line our family business is developing. Specifically he will be researching farming in Nicaragua, access to credit, and equipment distribution options.
For the past 2 years, we’ve had a prototype Tilmor Tractor in the Esteli area of Nicaragua. Learn more about Tilmor by watching this video:
